BABE #274: TIFFANY LANIER - Keynote Speaker, Clarity Strategist

Stacy Pierce

Tiffany is a keynote speaker, clarity strategist and founder of LPLC 360 and A Modern Visionary. She’s on a mission to help her clients live purposely and lead consciously, and it’s safe to say she’s doing a damn fine job. Through presentations, training, workshops, conferences and more, Tiffany consults companies and helps them build employee and member morale through creating a culture of purpose. She believes we all have a responsibility — to both ourselves and others — to live with intention about who we are, what we stand for and how we want to impact those around us. (We second that.)

The Basics:

Hometown: Norwalk, California and Plantation, Florida
Current city: Lake Worth, Florida
Alma mater: Florida State University
Degree: B.A., Communications; Minor, Psychology
Very first job: Digital communications coordinator
Hustle: Keynote Speaker, Clarity Strategist, Founder, LPLC 360 and A Modern Visionary

The Interests:

Babe you admire and why?
There are so many. This is a hard question. I really admire Michelle Obama. Now, having read “Becoming,” her ability to navigate her career, pivot when necessary, support her children and spouse the best way she could without giving up on her dreams and her vision for her life and the future is a way of being we can all strive for.

How do you spend your free time?
What free time? I guess some people would call the time I take in the morning for my practice my free time. I read, meditate, journal and move my body. Outside of creating intentional time for self-care and reflection, I love spending time with my partner, daughter and friends.

Go-to coffee order and/or adult beverage?
Matcha latte with coconut milk; red wine (blends are my fav.).

Current power anthem?
I’m Here,” from the Broadway cast of “The Color Purple,” and “Money,” by Cardi B.

What would you eat for your very last meal?
Gumbo.

What’s something you want to learn or master?
I want to master storytelling.

If you could have coffee with anyone in the world, who would it be?
Oprah and Lin-Manuel Miranda.

What’s something most don’t know about you?
I’m pretty much an open book, but most may not know I suffer from a foot and ankle disability that causes me to be in a lot of pain most of the time.

The Hustle:

Tell us about your hustle.
Through LPLC 360 and livewithtiffany.com, I run a speaking, coaching and consulting business that focuses on helping our clients live purposefully and lead consciously (hence the LPLC). I do keynote addresses, presentations and trainings for colleges, and corporate and special events (like conferences, workshops and retreats). I primarily coach entrepreneurs and leaders who are looking for clarity and alignment within their business and projects. I also consult with companies, helping them build employee or member morale and a culture of purpose, primarily through personal and professional development trainings and events. I‘m also the founder of the brand, A Modern Visionary. Right now we are a podcast and will be expanding to events this year. Primarily, our goal is to amplify the voices of leaders who “give a damn” and inspire our audience to give a damn too, in the realm of leadership, entrepreneurship and politics.

What does your typical workday look like?
I am all the things, with the help of an assistant and freelancers. Any given day I’m coaching clients (in-person or around the globe via Zoom), speaking at an event, preparing for presentations, meetings, emails and being creative with my social media.

What does “living purposefully and leading consciously” mean to you?
I believe living purposefully is something we all owe to ourselves, and leading consciously is what we owe to everyone else. Living purposefully: living on purpose, with purpose. Essentially, not letting life just happen to you, but becoming intentional about who you are, what you stand for and how you want to live this thing we call life. Leading consciously is showing up for yourself, those around you, humanity and the planet with awareness of your impact (personally and professionally), and taking deliberate action to vibrate higher and be a better human.

How did you decide to build a career around public speaking?
I love the stage. I love seeing the faces of my audience get their ah-ha when I present. I started public speaking while I was in college at Florida State University. I started an organization called Kauzunity Coalition; we would host facilitation sessions on various social issues. I was the lead facilitator, and I fell in love with not only guiding conversations and ideas, but doing it for larger audiences.

What inspired A Modern Visionary?
A Modern Visionary, as it stands today, was inspired by the (false) idea that leadership, entrepreneurship and politics are not intertwined. In reality, they very much are. No matter what circle I was a part of, it seemed as if everyone wanted to keep these conversations separate in their own container when they intersect at every level—especially the human level (which we all are). I wanted to have conversations at the intersection of each one of these topics, amplifying the voices of leaders doing this work. A big part of this vision is getting more millennials engaged, as we now are the new leaders navigating our communities, companies and the government. A Modern Visionary is still very new. We’re coming up on our one-year anniversary and, honestly, we’re just getting started. This next year we’ll have season two of the #AMVpod, new events and merch. I’m excited for what’s next.

Have you always had an entrepreneurial spirit?
I’ve always been entrepreneurial. I remember—I use to sell cups of Pepsi and cake (not together lol) to my neighbors as they got home from work. I was 6. My leadership style continues to evolve, but I’d say I’m a conscious leader; I lead from the inside-out, and encourage everyone to do the inner work necessary to lead from within as well.

What advice do you have for someone who wants to get more civically engaged, but doesn’t know where to start?
It starts with self. It starts with understanding who you are, what your core values are and what you stand for (and against). That level of personal clarity will lead you to finding like-minded individuals, podcasts or events that represent how you want to live and lead. Get involved locally, right where you live. Volunteer, go to a city hall meeting, engage. Locally is where the power is, anyway.

What’s been your biggest career milestone?
My biggest career milestone was launching livewithtiffany.com back in 2014. It’s now more of my speaker site, but originally it served as all things Tiffany (coaching, courses, eBooks, etc.) My goal was helping others find and share their gifts with the world. It was the first time I said: “Hello, world. I have arrived and I have a message.” Everything that has stemmed after has really been an evolution of who I am, but it all started with me showing up with a desire to serve the best way I could, and believing I had a message to share.

How has being a woman affected your professional experience?
I’m not sure if being a woman has had an impact on how others view me or my work, at least not to my knowledge. But I know as a heart-centered woman, there has definitely been a lot of times I’ve probably been too meek in certain rooms, not taking up as much space and not demanding more (whether it be money or time). What we can do to uplift women in general is pay them. Pay them what they are asking for, if not more. As far as my industry (speaking and personal development) go, stop trying to discount or nickle and dime our expertise.

What’s the gender ratio like in your industry? Do you see it evolving?
In speaking, personal development and leadership, it is definitely male-dominated. It’s shifting. As more women not only demand a seat at the table, but bring a chair or create the table, we’re making waves in every industry.

Are you involved with any other careers, side projects or organizations?
I’ve recently become a New Leaders Council fellow! Now I am amongst a wonderful group of progressive leaders all over the country.

Who are some women in your field you look to for inspiration?
Lisa Nichols and Mel Robbins.

Career and/or life advice for other babes?
Go for it. That vision you see in your mind and hold in your heart is there, and it’s showing up for a reason. Learn to trust the calling and just pursue it. It may not always work out how you think it should, but you better believe the lessons you learn and the clarity you receive from going for it are invaluable.
